What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Put simply, cognitive behavioural therapy concerns how we think (Cognitions) and what we do (Behaviour).

Often, the problems that we are experiencing are as a result of the way we are thinking about the situation and what we are doing to cope. Cognitive behavioural theory proposes that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours all influence each other, and so it's important that we consider all three when we work on developing healthier coping thoughts and behaviours.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends evidence-based psychological interventions for anxiety and depression disorders, with CBT being the most widely researched.

Therapy in Bath

There are many things that make CBT what it is, as an evidence-based treatment recommended by NICE* for anxiety and depression disorders. These include:

Collaboration- CBT involves the client and therapist working together on the problem. We work together to understand how the problem is being maintained, and what we can do to address it.

Formulation-driven and structured:

CBT is driven by a problem-specific formulation, so that we can understand the maintenance of our issues before we start to tackle them. Sessions are structured around these formulations, ensuring that everything that we do is relevant to you/your child's difficulties and recovery.

Adaptations can also be made to ensure sessions are age and developmentally appropriate, and taking into account any other conditions that may impact engagement with CBT such as Autism and ADHD.

Are you still unsure? Just ask and I would be happy to discuss this further with you.
